1. How can physical therapy help me?
On your first visit, your physical therapist will evaluate your condition and identify the source of your discomfort or dysfunction. The evaluation consists of a through history, a systems review, specific tests and measures related to your condition, Once evaluated, your therapist will develop a treatment program that will involve manual therapy and exercise, as well as modalities if they are needed to treat the problem areas. You will also receive instruction in a home exercise program as well as education on proper body mechanics and posture to prevent re-injury.
2. What types of treatment may I receive?
Your physical therapy treatment will depend on what impairments your physical therapist finds during your initial evaluation. Most physical therapy treatment plans consist of manual therapy where the therapist will perform “hands on” procedure to reverse any soft tissue and or joint impairments you may have. Your physical therapist will also design an exercise program aimed to improve your strength, flexibility, endurance, stamina, coordination, agility, etc. You will also receive education regarding posture, proper body mechanics, and other educational information that will educate you in preventing any re-occurrence that may normally occur upon competition of your physical therapy program.
3.What do I need to do to get started?
In New Jersey patients have direct access to physical therapy, which means patients do not require a prescription to receive physical therapy. However, most insurance companies do require the patients to obtain a physical therapy prescription from a physician in order for them to reimburse the physical therapy clinic. It is in your best interest to consult your physician to request physical therapy. If you not aware of which physician to consult regarding your condition, feel free to contact us and we can give you a list of physicians that may be able to help you.
4. Will my physical therapy be covered by my medical insurance?
Medical insurance generally covers physical therapy treatment. However, each insurance plan is different and what each insurance company covers varies greatly. You can check with your insurance carrier to determine your coverage. Or, if you prefer, you can call us at today and our staff will be glad to assist you in determining your benefits.
5. What should I bring with me for my initial evaluation?
For your first visit please plan on coming 15 minutes before the start of your appointment to complete your new patient paperwork which includes information about injury, current function and pain scale. You will also need your insurance card, physician’s referral and prescription, and a pair of comfortable clothes. If you have any medical reports such as an MRI, X-ray or EMG results you may bring those as well, but they are not necessary.
